On September 17th, 2014, the Sino-German Symposium on “Advanced Optical Imaging and Sensing in Life Science and Medicine" was held in the Suzhou Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Technology (SIBET), Chinese Academy of Sciences. The symposium is sponsored by the Chinese - German Center for Research Promotion, DFG and NSFC. The director of the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology (IPHT), Prof. Jürgen Popp, and 5 other senior professors from IPHT attended the symposium. During the symposium, the two parties (SIBET and IPHT) discussed about the possibility of establishing a Sino-German Joint Research Laboratory on Biomedical Photonics. Prof. Xiaodong Wu, vice president of SIBET and Prof. Jürgen Popp from Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology (IPHT), signed the cooperation framework agreement.

The two parties reached an agreement on collaborative research in the field of biomedical photonics. Both SIBET and IPHT will formulate joint research projects to apply for joint projects funded by the Chinese and German governments on super-resolution microscopy, multi-modal imaging, ultra-sensitive optical fiber sensors, etc.

Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology (IPHT) is a subsidiary institute of The Leibniz Association. The Institute of Photonic Technology (IPHT) investigates photonic processes and develops systems of the highest sensitivity, efficiency, and resolution – from the basics to applications in Biophotonics, fiber optics, and photonic detection. Its research is based on Microtechnology, nanotechnology, and fiber technology and addresses important questions in the areas of health, safety, energy, and the environment. Detection systems for the study of microorganisms and their interactions allow a detailed view of the molecular composition and processes within and between cells by IR/THz-sensor technology, fiber-optics, linear and non-linear Raman spectroscopy, and advanced Raman applications like Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) and Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (TERS) technology.
