On September 18th, 2014, the Sino-German Symposium, sponsored by NSFC and DFG, on “Advanced Optical Imaging and Sensing in Life Science and Medicine" was held in the Suzhou Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Technology (SIBET), Chinese Academy of Sciences. The director of Center for Micro-fluidics and Medical Diagnostics (CMMD), University of Notre Dame (ND), Prof. Hsueh-Chia Chang attended the symposium. During the symposium the two parties (SIBET and CMMD) discussed about academic exchanges, joint research and joint training programs in the fields of Medical Diagnostics. Prof. Xiaodong Wu, vice president of SIBET and Prof. Hsueh-Chia Chang from CMMD, signed the cooperation framework agreement.

The two parties reached an agreement on collaborative research in the field of ultra-sensitive optical fiber sensors, microfluidics system for biosensing, ultra-sensitive and portable Nucleic acid diagnostics etc., and explore opportunities for potential collaboration.

Center for Micro-fluidics and Medical Diagnostics (CMMD) focuses on microfluidic and nanofluidic research coupled with electrokinetics, optics, plasmonics and acoustics for biosening applications. Researchers of this center are currently pursuing biosensing of pathogens associated with infectious diseases, cancer detection, waterborne diseases, foodborne diseases and environmental applications.
