Global health challenges require worldwide attention. “The innovation of biomedical engineering will empower us to tackle global health challenges,” said WU Chengtie, director of Suzhou Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Technology (SIBET) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, on a parallel forum of the 2024 Zhongguancun forum held in Beijing on 26th April.
WU shared this opinion during his report of “The innovation of biomedical engineering for global health challenges” and the following panel discussion on the parallel forum.
The parallel forum, “Global health and development forum - addressing new global health challenges with Innovation”, drew hundreds of renowned experts from international organizations, research institutions, universities, and enterprises.
Centered on “Addressing new global health challenges with Innovation”, global experts discussed how science empowers life and health, and how to address health challenges with innovation at the forum.
SIBET has made significant progress in biomedical optics, biomedical diagnostics, rehabilitation engineering. Adapting to the global health development trajectory, SIBET is focusing on high-precision tumor diagnosis, neuroscience, organoids interaction systems, AI +, biomaterials, according to WU.
“We are driving biomedical engineering innovations to confront worldwide health challenges and strive to foster a global community of health for all,” WU said.
Health issue is a common global challenge for all humanity, and requires joint endeavor to address. “We need to enhance talent cultivation systems, increase R&D investment, promote commercialization of medical device achievements,” said WU.
The 2024 "Global Health and Development Forum - Addressing New Global Health Challenges with Innovation" was jointly supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, hoping to build a science and technology innovation exchange platform for global health research with international influence.
Founded in 2007 with the permanent theme of ‘Innovation and Development’, the Zhongguancun Forum has been held annually for 14 consecutive years, and is a national platform for China's global exchange and cooperation in science and technology innovation.
